| emotional overload |
How many people under 5'5" does it take to change a light bulb?
The past few days have been chock full of highs and lows for me. When you have so many conflicting emotions going on, I suppose it's just easier to feel numb. I don't know what to feel right now.
Friday morning, I opened an email from a high school buddy I lost contact with a couple years ago when she moved to Dallas. She wanted children so badly, but couldn't seem to keep a baby once she got pregnant. Her email said she had a new baby girl. I was elated!
Right before I left work, I got a call from a good friend. She got laid off Friday morning. I missed our lunch date on Thursday, you know, cause I was in bed with the funk. She had a surprise for me: she's expecting a baby. Highs and lows, I tell ya. All I'm saying is thank God for COBRA.
My mom stayed with us this weekend. She was so helpful in watching Lauren while we went to a business dinner party on Friday and also to the Don Williams concert on Saturday night. We really enjoyed ourselves at the dinner, and Rancito couldn't stop grinning like a 4-year-old with his hand stuck in a jar of jellybeans at the concert. Don was fantastic as usual, and I even spotted a Survivor Vanuatu alum sitting nearby. Anybody remember Scout? She was there with a bunch of her girlfriends. Let's just say we were glad when the house lights finally dimmed.
This morning, mom let me sleep in until 8:30. It was awesome. She and Lauren were playing in Lauren's play room when I got up. Mom was unusually quiet, and then told me that Dad called last night to tell her that he accidentally ran over one of their dogs, Buddy. As mom broke down in my arms, I couldn't help but think that our roles should have been reversed. I'm the kid and she's the comforter. But it was okay, I was glad I could be there for mom.
Baby Lauren watches Buddy brave Joker the donkey last May.
Buddy was a rescue dog that I found for mom and dad three or four years ago. His name was Firecracker, but that lasted about 2 minutes seeing how Mom's horse barn burned down that year as a result of errant fireworks in her neighborhood. Once I met Buddy, I knew he was meant to be. He had a great personality, penetrating eyes, and a big butt. What? My dad likes to scratch dog butts, you got a problem with that? Buddy finally grew on Dad (we, um, kind of surprised him), and it wasn't long before Buddy showed my parents just how smart he was. He learned to sit for treats in one day, and later learned to sing on command, "WOO! WOO! WOO!" There was no doubt he was a member of the family. My mom and dad are completely torn up about it. I wish I could put a bandaid on it and fix it.
So that was my weekend. Up and down, high and low. The good news: no puke. And Lauren said, "tiger" today. And we all flew kites this afternoon. It was beautiful kite flying weather, and you'd better believe I wanted that kite to stay up as long as possible.
Love you Mom. Love you Dad. Love you J. |
