| Breaking the Silence |
Last night I took Lauren out on the back porch because it was 101 degrees in our house. I refuse to turn on the air conditioning until droplets of sweat bead out on my forehead in my sleep. Rance won't let me open up windows because of allergens and dust. It's a funny little argument we have every year. So Lauren and I evacuated the premises.
We sat facing west watching a not so spectacular sunset. Her little head bobbled around as she took in all of the new sights and sounds. Invisible children were laughing and shouting across the way as she craned her head left. The dogs shot past in hot pursuit after a bunny, car, or phantom burglar. Bobble to the right. A plane was traveling overhead and I pointed and said, "plane" as all good mommies do. Although she did not look up at the plane, she did look inquisitively at my outstretched arm in all of it's pasty white glory. Birds dive-bombed overhead and sung to one another. Lauren's head tilted back so far that she would have fallen end over end had I not been her LaZboy recliner for the evening. And then, "Brrrrrrrrrp!" Lauren broke the flurry of activity with a belch rivaling that of a 45 year-old NASCAR fan sitting on the couch in his boxers and chowing on pork rinds. "That's my girl," I thought proudly as all mothers should in regards to their child's digestive health.
I wasn't planning on having so much fun just sitting outside with Lauren. It's amazing how much I tune out while she is bobbling her head after each new sound. It's a fantastic display to witness. I'm sure there will be many more evening outings for us, while daddy sits inside frying of course. |
