Baby Lauren

Wife to husband, Rancito, of 4 years. Mother of one-year old daughter, Lauren, two mini wiener dogs that I refer to as Farkota, and one big mutt named Champ. This is my way of telling Lauren I have loved her since the day I saw her tiny bean body on the ultrasound screen.

Happy Mother's Day...to ME!
Image hosted by Photobucket.com
I woke up around six o'clock this morning in my parent's guest bed and heard Lauren's quick baby snores next to my head. Her hand was laying near her face and I bent my head down to hers so that my forehead touched the top of her head and my chin touched her hand. I breathed in her light baby scent and felt the gentle warmth of her tiny body and sighed. I thought that there couldn't be a possible more perfect way to begin my first ever Mother's Day. Special note to Aunt Trina: this post made me think of you. You are the best mother without kids that we know. We love you.

Now before anyone starts in on how bad a mother I am because I let my baby sleep in my bed, let me tell you that Lauren is only allowed in our bed under certain circumstances:

1) If Lauren is sick
2) If Lauren is screaming with colic
3) If Lauren doesn't know she's tired and it's 11pm
4) If we are spending the night away from home
5) If the boogie man has set up shop in her closet
6) If tornadoes are forecasted overnight
7) If WW3 has begun.

We run a tight ship here at the Miller house. In fact, our home is so much like a ship that Lauren thinks she's a compass. No matter how well we think we've got Lauren propped up in our bed with head to headboard and toes to footboard, she will always move so that her head is jutting into my side and that her feet are planting firmly into Daddy's back. The hypothesis was confirmed last night when we slept opposite our normal sides of the bed and Lauren ended up pointing North into Mommy's hipbone and South into Daddy's back. Daddy woke this morning complaining that he still felt feet in his back even though Lauren awoke and left the bed two hours prior. Sure, new parents are warned not to let babies sleep in their beds because of SIDS, but the real truth is that Mommy and Daddy are assured a very restless night peppered with baby kicks and head butts. This is the #1 reason why we rarely let Lauren sleep in our bed.

Back to the most important issue at hand...

Not only is it my first ever Mother's Day today, but it is also a day of firsts for Lauren. Lauren met her very first horse, donkey, and sheep today. My mom let the horses out while my dad held her and they looked through the back window. Lauren saw the horses and quickly went into "deer in the headlights" mode. She said, "Ub bah?" and didn't take her eyes off of them for a very long time. Rance and I dressed her and took her out to meet them about an hour later. She was all smiles and giggles. The darn donkey, Joker, wouldn't leave us alone the whole time, but I did get several cute shots of all the animals and Lauren, of course. I will be posting them when I get home. I guess it's time I cave and get a Flickr account.

By the way, if you are wondering about the origins of the picture above, it was taken when Lauren was a month and 3 days old. Mom and I went to a baby massage class together and we snuck off to the back of the room so that Lauren could, um, nap.
