Baby Lauren

Wife to husband, Rancito, of 4 years. Mother of one-year old daughter, Lauren, two mini wiener dogs that I refer to as Farkota, and one big mutt named Champ. This is my way of telling Lauren I have loved her since the day I saw her tiny bean body on the ultrasound screen.

To Lauren, on Her 8 Month Birthday
Image hosted by Photobucket.com

Dearest Lauren,

Today you are eight glorious months old. You are my light in a world of darkness. You are the daughter I had always dreamed of having and more. Before you came in to my life, I always felt something was missing, and now I know it was you. And out of all of the things I have accomplished, nothing can hold a candle to your tiny soul in my arms.

This past month has been full of firsts for you. You crawled for the first time on April 11, and thought you did such a great job that you didn't really get interested in doing it again until weeks later. You started pulling yourself up to stand on April 29, and Mommy and Daddy had to lower your crib mattress for the first time. And yes, I missed both events by about 1.3 seconds.

We went to the zoo for the first time, sans camera naturally. I took you for your first wagon ride and you did wonderfully. It's more fun when we take the wagon over the gravel even though I have to seriously consider whether or not the turbulence is enough to cause shaken baby syndrome. This month was the first time I got to push you in a swing. As I pushed you, I envisioned how wonderful a job your daddy is going to do on building "Lauren's Park." We were just talking this weekend that we need to incorporate some kind of playhouse into the swingset. Eventually our improvements for Lauren's Park will drive us to building you your own home in the backyard.

You attended your first baby shower for cousin Grin and you were the Belle of the ball in your cherry dress. You took your first bath in a bathtub, an event that has yet to be recreated because Mommy's back is still screaming. You met your first horsey and donkey at Granny Grin's, and you squealed with delight as though you had kissed a frog and he had become a prince.

Your favorite things are balloons, Cheerios, ceiling fans, TV remotes, cords, yelling "Buh buh," and Dakota's rapidly wagging tail. Of course, these are only the baby-approved list of items you like. The rest of the list includes Mommy's magazine's, fish hooking strangers, Dakota's ears, stick shift cars, bungee jumping, and sharp knives.

Last night, after we put you to bed, Daddy leaned over and wished me "Happy Mother's Day" for the hundredth time. I thanked him and smiled an unseen smile in the darkness. He said, "I love you because you are such a good mother and Lauren loves you too." Now I know. That's what "buh buh" means.
